The Must-Sees of Key West

Aside from the beautiful sunsets and breathtaking natural landscape of Key West, there is an incredible number of historic landmarks that can be visited on the island. In this post, we will provide an overview of some of the best attractions that must be seen during your time in Key West

Duval Street

Taking a stroll down Duval Street is a great way to take in the atmosphere of historic Key West. Duval Street is Key West’s main street and is lined with restaurants and shops catered toward tourists. Some of Key West’s most historic homes are located on this main strip and can really give you a sense of the old Florida Victorian charm that has been lost due to more commercial and modern development over the years.

Ernest Hemmingway Home and Museum

The great American author Ernest Hemingway purchased this 1851 Spanish Colonial house in 1931 and lived there until 1940. Equipped with a verdant tropical garden and salt-water pool, Hemmingway claimed that this home nearly put him in financial ruin.

Inside the home, you can see the writer’s collection of 17th and 18th-century Spanish furniture as well as the many house cats that still roam the property. Many of the cats are believed to be descendants of the original house cats that were on his property during the time he lived there.

Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Boasting 50 species of butterflies in the natural garden habitat of a glass conservatory, this is without a doubt one of Key West’s top attractions. In addition to the colorful varieties of butterflies, there are also more than 20 species of exotic birds that live there, making this an absolute must-see attraction.

Mallory Square

Once a warehouse area, this main square is now the location of Key West’s nightly sunset viewing ritual. This is one of the most popular free attractions in town and is a great place to people watch as well as the perfect spot to observe the beautiful pastel colors of the sunset. Enjoy vibrant hues of pink, purple, orange, and red as the sunsets over the beautiful island. You can also enjoy a large variety of different shops located around the square.

Harry S. Truman Little White House

Built in 1890, the restored Harry S. Truman Little White House served as the headquarters for the naval command through World War II. Truman had first visited the house in 1946 and used it several times during his presidency as a vacation home.

Inside the house, you can see all the original decor and furniture that has remained unchanged from the time Truman was there.
